The Bayfield High School track and field teams made their way to three different meets over the weekend and several Wolverines continued their winning ways on the front range.
The action began at Friday's Pueblo Twilight meet and Carl Heide continued his season-long onslaught in the hurdles. Heide's 15.09-second time in the 110-meter hurdles and 39.60 in the 300 hurdles gave him two more wins in an already dominant season.
Alex Knight, Sloan Mazur, Cody Speece and Jackson Sibley took second in the 4x800 with a time of 8:24.68. Dax Snooks placed third with a 16.08 time in the 110-meter hurdles and Sam Westbrook was third in the shot put with a throw if 49 feet, 3.25 inches.
Gus Roberts was fourth in the 400-meter dash in 51.90 and Ryan Phelps took fourth in both the discus and shot put events.
Brian Mashak took fifth in the 200 (23.38) and sixth in the 100 (11.24).
The BHS girls were led Friday by a record-breaking performance by Jordan Lanning who broke the girls high jump meet record clearing 5-foot-5. Lanning also won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.91 and set a Bayfield High School record with 35-11 in the triple jump.
Amber Johnson had a pair of second-place finishes in the 100-meter (16.53) and 300 (48.38) hurdles events, took third in the 200 (26.67) and fourth in the 100 (13.38).
Tymbree Florian was third in long jump with 15-9 and Maddi Foutz took fourth with 1:02.33 in the 400-meter dash.
In Saturday's Doherty Spartan Invite in Colorado Springs, Heide broke two of his own school records with a second-place 39.34 time in the 300 hurdles and fifth-place 15.00 110 hurdles. Phelps finished second with 149-4 in the discus while Westbrook was third with 148-8. Westbrook also took third with 49-3 in shot put, while Phelps finished fifth with 46-11.
Johnson led the girls with a victory in the 300 hurdles in 46.53. Lanning's 5-5 in the high jump was a winner again and she added a second-place 17-2 mark in long jump to go with another school record 15.75 in the 100 hurdles.
The 4x400 team of Foutz, Bridget Goddard, Isis Gonzales and Johnson broke the BHS record and earned fourth place with a time of 4:06.5. Johnson also took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles.
Bayfield was also represented at the Terry Allen Invite. David Hawkins won the shot put with a throw of 43-1. Chad Winkler took second in pole vault with 11-8. Reed Merchant had two third place finishes with a 24.90 200 dash and 55.42 in the 400. He also finished fifth in the pole vault clearing 9-2 right behind teammate Coltin Fine (11-2).
Emily Bauer had the only podium finish for the girls at the Terry Alley Invite. Bauer took third with 7-2 in the pole vault and Miranda Talbot was fourth (7-2). Rachel Bauer, Jacqueline George, Skyla Ruybal and Gracie Weybright finished fifth in the 4x100. The 4x200 team (Olivia Keitz, Ruybal, Mylee Sanders, Weybright) also finished fifth with 2:05.62.
While many BHS athletes already have qualified for state May 18-20 in Denver, many will head north to Monte Vista for the Last Chance meet on Saturday to see if they can reach the top 18 in their events, securing a state berth.
