Bayfield track and field place second in Cortez Invitational

Bayfield sees eight winners at league track and field meet

The Bayfield High School track and field team saw action over the weekend by traveling to Montezuma-Cortez for the Cortez Invitational.

Both the Bayfield boys and girls teams finished a close second to Cortez, which won both the boys and girls meets. Bayfield’s boys had 146 points while the Cortez boys had 159. Mancos was a distant third with 76.

The Bayfield girls had 114 points while Cortez had 166. Pagosa Springs took third place with 98 points.

Bayfield junior Brian Mashak tied his personal record in the 100-meter dash with 11.35 seconds, which was good enough for the win. Mashak then returned with a 23.44 second-performance in the 200, which was also good enough for the win.

Mashak was also a part of the 4x100-meter relay team of Jaden Vitagliano, Samual Kundrick and David Hawkins that took first place with 47.03 seconds.

Both of Bayfield’s 4x400 teams took second and third place. The team of Ethan Tate, Brandon Stuever, Jesse Westbrook and Josh Westbrook took second with a time of 3:51.19. The team of Carl Heide, Gus Roberts, Cash Snooks and Reed Merchant ran a time of 3:56.50.

Heide had a big day individually as well. He took first in both the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.88 seconds, and the 300 hurdles with a time of 44.78. Heide narrowly beat Dolores’ Tristan Medina who finished with 44.88 seconds.

Heide also tied Snooks in the high jump for second place when both athletes jumped five feet, six inches.

Senior Sam Westbrook took first place in the shot put and the discus. Westbrook won with a throw of 45 feet, 11 inches in the shot put, and won with 116 feet, eight inches.

Ryan Phelps took second in the discus with a throw of 112-11, and took third in the shot put with 40-2.

Other throwers for Bayfield finishing were Hawkins, who finished fourth in the shot put with 39-5, and Tim Haisman took fifth with 34-4.

In the 800, Alex Knight took third with 2:14.45. Ro Paschal of Mancos took first with 2:05.12, and Josh Ramos of Cortez took 2:13.33 for second place.

In the 4x800, Bayfield’s team of Stuever, Knight, Sloan Mazur and Cody Speece took third place with a time of 9:09.54. Mancos took first with 8:45.86 and Pagosa Springs took second with 8:55.58.

On the girls side of the track, Bayfield’s Tymbree Florian got two wins in the 100 and the long jump. Florian ran a 13.70 in the 100, and jumped 16 feet even.

Florian also was the anchor in the 4x100 team that took first with 55.64. Courtney Bayles, Shaylea Freier and Madeleine Foutz rounded out the rest of the team.

Foutz took first in the 200 with a time of 28.15.

Bayfield’s 4x200 team took first with a time of 1:55.36. That team was comprised of Bridget Goddard, Amber Johnson, Isis Gonzales and Bayles. Bayfield’s second 4x200 team took third place with a time of 2:00.44 as the team was comprised of Katie Hawkins, Freier, Florian and Foutz.

Johnson took third place in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 56.44. Sierra Schwartz of Dolores took first with 55.27, and Amy Jones of Pagosa Springs took third with 57.84.

Bayfield’s 4x400 relay team took second with a time of 4:51.73. Goddard, Bayles, Gonzales and Tori Tate made up the relay team.

In the shot put, Tierra Christensen took second for Bayfield with a throw of 31-5. Pagosa Springs’ Keena Murphy took first with a throw that was also 31-5. Kristine Candelaria of Cortez took third with 30-1.5.

Goddard took third place for Bayfield in the 400 with a time of 1:06.71. Josie Bernholtz of Dolores took first with a time of 1:05.84, and Regina Schuster of Cortez took second with 1:06.05.

Ignacio’s boys team took fifth place with 35 points while the girls team also finished fifth, but with 30. Bryan Gram took first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.58.

Ignacio’s Natoni Cundiff took third in the discus with 100-10, and sixth in the shot put with 34-0. Azala Perez took second place in the 100 with a time of 14.07. Kelly Campbell took second in the high jump with a leap of 4-8.

Bayfield will host its next meet, the Pine River Invitational, on April 16 after spring break concludes.
