Bayfield track and field sees succdess at Monte Vista

Boys, girls win in final track event of season

The Bayfield High School track and field team found a great way to finish the regular season as the Wolverines won both the boys and girls events at the Monte Vista Last Chance Meet on Saturday afternoon.

The boys won easily with 117 points while the girls also had no problem getting points either with 100.

The boys saw six first place finishes with sophomore Carl Heide coming up big with two wins of his own. Heide took first in the boy’s 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.21 seconds and first in the boy’s 300-meter hurdles with 41.97 seconds.

On the girls side, Bayfield had four fist place finishes that included the girl’s 4x100 meter relay and 4x200 meter relay teams winning their respective races. The team of Tymbree Florian, Maddie Foutz, Shaylea Freier and Amber Johnson finished with a time of 53.01 seconds in the 4x100.

The team of Foutz, Bridget Goddard, Isis Gonzales and Johnson ran a time of 1 minute, 50.44 seconds in the 4x200.

Rounding out the boys success was junior Brian Mashak who took first in the 100-meter dash with a sprint of 11.51 seconds. The boy’s 4x800 relay team of Alex Knight, Sloan Mazur, Cody Speece and Brandon Stuever won with a time of 8:36.21.

Junior Sam Westbrook finished the season by taking the top spot at the shot put when he threw for 48 feet, 2.50 inches. Freshman David Hawkins took third with a throw of 41-5.25.

Westbrook also took second in the discus with a throw of 141-9.

Sophomore Chad Winkler also took first for Bayfield when he won the pole vault event with a jump of 11 feet, 3 inches. Senior Cash Snooks picked up third place with a leap of 10-0, and sophomore Colton Fine tied for fourth with 9-6.

The boys’ 4x100 team of Hawkins, Gus Roberts, Snooks and Ethan Tate took fourth with a time of 47.93 seconds. In the 4x200, the team of Mashak, Hawkins, Heide and Roberts took third for Bayfield with a time of 1:38.16.

In the 4x400, the team of Heide, Roberts, Speece and Tate took second with a time of 3:36.54.

Rounding out the girls, Bayfield saw Johnson win in the girls’ 300 hurdles with a time of 50.39 seconds. She also took third in the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.77 seconds.

Recent Fort Lewis College signee and senior Katie Hawkins won in the pole vault when she leapt 9-0. Juniors Emily Bauer and Miranda Talbot tied for fourth when they both jumped 7-0.

In the girls’ 100-meter, Florian took third with a run of 13.76 seconds with Freier coming in fourth with 13.86. Florian also took second place in the long jump with a finished distance of 16-5.50.

For the girls’ 800, Goddard took second with a run of 2:33.41.

Gram takes the 400 for Ignacio

The Ignacio girls took 13th with a score of 23 while the boys placed 14th with 18 points. The boys were led by Bryan Gram who took first in the boy’s 400 with a finished time of 51.24 seconds. Gram also took fourth in the boy’s 200 with a time of 23.59 seconds.

In the girls’ pole vault, Ignacio’s Chrystianne Valdez tied for second with a finished jump of 7-6. Ignacio’s Lea Monroe was tied for fourth in the pole vault with a jump of 7-0.

Ignacio’s Azala Perez took fifth with a time of 13.91 in the girls’ 100, and also took fourth in the 200 with a run of 28.55 seconds.

Natoni Cundiff rounded out Ignacio with a sixth-place finish in the discus with a throw of 117-9.
