Bayfield High School's boys and girls track and field teams welcomed 20 other squads to BHS for Saturday's annual Pine River Invitational. At the end of the day, none of them could beat the hosts.
Bayfield won the girls competition with 154 points and the boys won with 141. Durango's girls finished second with 125 points and the boys also finished second with 113. Ignacio's boys team took 13th and the Bobcats had some impressive performances on the girls team, though they didn't place in the final standings.
For the Wolverines, the day belonged to Amber Johnson, Jordan Lanning and the BHS girls. Johnson won the 100-meter dash in 13.29 seconds, 200-meter dash (27.01) and 300 hurdles (50.05) events to lead the Wolverines. She was also second behind teammate Lanning in the 100 hurdles. Lanning's winning time was 16.49 and Johnson came in just behind in 17.00.
Lanning also won the high jump with a leap of was five feet, five inches and placed runner-up in the triple jump with a final mark of 33-6.
Maddi Foutz (9-0) and Emily Bauer (8-6) took first and second, respectively, for Bayfield in the pole vault.
The BHS relay teams were outstanding in the meet as the 4x100 team (Claire Belmear, Foutz, Tymbree Florian, Lanning) took first in 53.87. The 4x400 team (Belmear, Foutz, Bridget Goddard, Isis Gonzales) posted a winning time of 4:22.45 and 4x200 (Belmear, Foutz, Goddard, Gonzales) was third with 1:54.29.
Goddard took second in the 800 in 2:27.95 and Florian was third in the long jump at 15-10 and fifth in the 100 (13.82).
Mikayla Barnes finished third in the discus (104-9) and fourth in the shot put (31-6), while fellow Wolverine Tiara Christensen took fourth and sixth. Miranda Talbot was fifth in pole vault (6-6). Jacqueline George took seventh in high jump (4-5) and Courtney Bayles was eighth in discus with a throw 90 feet.
Bayfield's boys were led by two wins from thrower Ryan Phelps. The junior blew away the field with a discus throw that reached 147-8, more than 15 feet better than the next competitor. He also won with a shot put throw of 47-2, while teammate Wyatt Killinen's second place throw was 43-6.
Brian Mashak and Carl Heide also came away with wins. Mashak won the 100 in 11.63 and Dylan Hilliker took seventh (12.13). Heide won the 110-meter hurdles with a mark of 15.64 and took fourth in the 300 hurdles in 42.71.
The Wolverines' 4x100 relay team (Heide, Dylan Hilliker, Killinen and Mashak) won with a school-record time of 43.72. Bayfield also won the 4x800 (Alex Knight, Cody Speece, Jackson Sibley, Sloan Mazur) with a winning effort of 8:38.44. The 4x200 team (Brian Cuellar, Hilliker, Gus Roberts, Ethan Tate) took second (1:35.98) and 4x400 (Speece, Roberts, Keyon Prior, Heide) tied for third in 3:37.12.
Chad Winkler (11-0) and Colton Fine (10-6) finished first and second respectively in the pole vault. Dax Snooks finished third in high jump at 5-9 and placed seventh in the triple jump (38-4.5). Mazur finished fourth in the 400 with a time of 54.02, while Roberts (54.49) was sixth and Tate took eighth (55.38).
For the Ignacio Bobcats, Bryan Gram led the team with a third-place time of 53.38 in the 400. Gram also ran a season-best 24.85 in the 200, which earned him 10th place.
Nathan Cundiff threw a personal best in the discus with a mark of 130-2 for third place and Colton Smithson also put up a personal-best pole vault effort and finished seventh at 8-6.
Bobcats' Jaylynn Herrera finished 10th in the long jump with a jump of 13-3, 11th in the 200 (30.18), 13th in the 100 (14.77) and 15th in the 400 in 1:10.88.
Kiana Valdez was 15th with 30.81 in the 200 and 21st in the 400 (1:17.07). She also placed 17th in the 100.
Rachael Cooper took 14th in the 300-meter hurdles (1:01.10) and 23rd in the 100 hurdles and Lea Monroe was 27th in the 200 (32.69) and 31st in the 100 with 15.93.
