Bayfield, water district open expanded plant plant

On Tuesday, area residents were able to see the inner workings of a water treatment plant.

Thanks to the La Plata Archuleta Water District, the Bayfield Water Treatment Plant now can treat another million gallons of water per day (MGD) for a current capacity of 1.5 MGD. At an open house, town and district officials showed off the new expansion.

"This is a win-win for the town and LAPLAWD," said Bayfield Mayor Matt Salka. The water district will use the treated water for its growing rural water system.

The new capacity is shared between the district, with 0.75 MGD, and the town, with 0.25 MGD. The expansion of the water treatment facility also includes a building with enough room to allow future expansion up to an additional 1 MGD. If the expansion occurred, the plant would have a capacity of 3.5 MGD.
