Bayfield volleyball wins top-ten battle on road

Senior Evelette Hollibaugh smashed 15 kills at a .297 rate Thursday night and the red-hot Bayfield Wolverines volleyball booked their fourth-consecutive victory – and eighth in their last 10 outings – upon 3A Intermountain rival Centauri’s court.

Senior Grace Barber totaled seven kills in BHS’ 25-21, 25-20, 25-18 away sweep, while junior Vivien Clance downed five as senior setter Avery Shipman racked up 30 assists offensively.

Shipman also came up with 13 digs defensively in La Jara, but wasn’t alone in cracking double figures. Evelette Hollibaugh came up with 14 digs, as did senior libero Lauren Rich 14 and Clance a critical 16 against Class 3A’s fifth-ranked crew.

Right behind at No. 6 in Monday’s rankings, Bayfield (12-5 overall, 5-2 IML) will visit 5A Durango on Tuesday. DHS is 8-13 overall and 5-4 in the 4A/5A Southwestern after beating 4A Grand Junction Central (3-13, 1-7 SWL) on Friday then 4A Palisade (7-9, 4-4) the next afternoon.

Centauri slipped to 12-6 overall (3-4 IML).

VOLLEYCATS KEEP ROLLING:

Continuing 2A/1A San Juan Basin League action Friday night, Ignacio had little problem following up a 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 25-15 win at 3A Pagosa Springs the previous night and defeated Ridgeway once, but twice inside IHS Gymnasium.

The first match ended with the Volleycats, which started the week ranked No. 10 in 2A, on top 25-6, 25-12, 25-10, with sophomore Alleah Neil pounding nine kills, juniors Maliyah Martinez, Lainee Bradley and Reggi Gustafson each downing six. Sophomore Aubriella Herrera served five aces, while Sirios (27 assists) and junior libero Tarah Baker each served four.

RHS (1-12 overall; 0-6 SJBL, 0-5 2A SJBL) then fell 11-25, 7-25, 13-25 as the team’s losing streak reached seven matches prior to hosting No. 8 Dolores on Tuesday.

Ignacio (17-3, 10-0), meanwhile, extended its winning streak to seven against Ouray (2-12; 1-7 SJBL, 1-4 1A SJBL) on Saturday with a 3-0 win.

After returning from OHS, the ’Cats will next travel on Saturday to Dove Creek.
