Bayfield wrestles short in La Jara

It was a long trip for a short meet.

The Bayfield High School wrestling team lost its Intermountain League dual 48-18 against Centauri on Thursday in La Jara after only being able to bring four wrestlers because of ineligibility, injury and sickness.

Ryan Nava pinned Centauri’s Diego Fernandez in the third period at 120 pounds to win his sixth consecutive match after starting the season late.

“He’s starting to mature a little bit, been working a little harder in the room,” BHS head coach Todd McMenimen said.

Shane Wilson pinned the Wolverines’ Gus Roberts at 138 pounds in the second period to close out the dual.

There were forfeits at the rest of the weight classes.

McMenimen expects to have a more full team when BHS will travel to its next meet Saturday in Salida.

“We’ll possibly shift a few weights and end up filled from 113 (pounds) up to 145,” McMenimen said.
