Bayfield wrestles way past Centauri

Schneider, Pickering clinch victory

Bayfield was in a 16-0 hole early against Centauri before the Wolverines wrestled past the Falcons.

The Bayfield High School wrestling team won a Class 3A Intermountain League dual-meet against Centauri 42-28 on Thursday night in Bayfield. BHS had 12 wrestlers active, while Centauri had 11. Both teams forfeited at heavyweight, while BHS was also without a 145-pound wrestler.

Centauri gave up forfeits at 138 and 182 pounds.

The Wolverines first got on the board at 170 pounds, as Shane Moore worked his way to a 15-3 major decision against Byron Shawcroft to cut the Centauri lead to 16-4. BHS picked up six forfeit points at 182 and was within 16-10 when the feared duo of John Foutz and Daniel Westbrook took their turns on the mat.

Foutz pinned Jownes Archuleta in 1 minute, 20 seconds to earn six more points at 195 pounds, and that tied the match. Westbrook gave the Wolverines their first lead with a 6-0 decision win against Reni Lucero at 220, and BHS had a 19-16 advantage.

Bayfield’s Simon Schneider smothers Centauri’s Robert Coombs for a third-period pin.

The Falcons reclaimed the lead at 106 pounds, but Bayfield got back on top at 113 pounds as Simon Schneider earned a third-period pin at the 4:54 mark of the match. He controlled his opponent, Robert Coombs, and nearly had a pin at the end of each of the first two periods before finishing the job in the third.

He went into the third period with a 10-0 lead.

James Mars backed up Schneider’s pin win with another for the Wolverines, as he beat Zeb Sandoval in the second period of their 120-pound match. That gave BHS a 31-22 lead.

At 126 pounds, Dylan Pickering clinched the BHS victory. He quickly amassed a 10-0 lead on Jeremy Coombs in the first period and secured a 15-0 technical fall victory to give BHS five more team points and a 36-22 advantage. The Wolverines held on from there.

The Wolverines will stay close to home this weekend at the Aztec Tiger Duals on Saturday.
