Senior night for Bayfield High School wrestling was a tough one against one of the state’s top teams and a regional rival, but a pair of seniors were able to secure victories Thursday night in Bayfield.
Garrett Beebe and Jake Sandrey earned decision wins for the Wolverines in their 58-12 dual-meet loss to Class 3A Intermountain League foe Pagosa Springs.
The Pagosa Pirates were able to score 24 points off Bayfield forfeits at weight classes in which the Wolverines didn’t have a wrestler.
Beebe (32-8) earned Bayfield’s second win of the night in a 5-3 decision win against Grant Aucoin (10-9) at 138 pounds. It was Beebe’s second win against Aucoin in five days, as he also earned a 3-0 decision win against the Pirate last Saturday in Ignacio at the Butch Melton Invitational.
Sandrey (29-10) followed in the next match with a 7-4 victory against Tate Hinger (28-8) at 145 pounds. Sandrey proved he is healthy and ready to go following up a second-place finish at the Butch Melton Invitational.
Bayfield’s first win of the night came at 195 pounds, as John Foutz (24-9) was able to pin Pagosa Springs’ Connor Aragon (18-10) in 1 minute, 49 seconds.
The six points for Foutz cut the Pirates’ lead to 22-6 at the time.
At 220 pounds, Pagosa’s Nolan Stretton (22-8) was able to pin Bayfield’s Daniel Westbrook 55 seconds into the second period. It was another tough match, as Westbrook (29-11) nearly had Stretton on the mat. Saturday in Ignacio, Stretton earned a narrow 3-2 decision against Westbrook.
Lane Grimwood (14-14) started the night for the Wolverines at 152 pounds. He ran into a top-five opponent in the state in Trevor Bryant (30-4). Bryant was able to secure a pin in 1:08.
Ian Reinhardt (18-7) followed with a 15-1 major decision win against Bayfield’s Jason Schneider (8-14).
