After a week of canceled competitions, Bayfield’s wrestlers returned to the mat Wednesday against Pagosa Springs for their first of three challenges this week.

With both teams forfeiting several weights, only seven matches were contested in the dual, and Pagosa ended up winning, 57-22. An additional six exhibition matches were staged afterward.

James Mars scored a win for BHS at 132 pounds, beating Griffin Bower by a 14-3 major decision.

Deegan Barnes also won at 152 for Bayfield. Barnes pinned Jacob Miller in 2 minutes, 24 seconds.

Pagosa, however, won the other five contested matches.

At 160 pounds, Heath Fullbright pinned Donovan Candelaria in 3:51.

At 106, Michael Thomas pinned Hunter Mars in the third period at the 5:03 mark.

At 120, Keaton Pickering lost to Luke Tressler 7-1.

At 126, Ethan Muzur pinned Avery Mitzlaf in 1:32.

At 145, Cash Prett also was pinned, by Pagosa’s Tommy Barker in 1:44.

Bayfield will hit the mat twice this week.

The Wolverines will wrestle Montezuma-Cortez and Ignacio at 6 p.m. Friday at BHS.

Bayfield will then compete Saturday in Ignacio’s Butch Melon Classic. Spectators, however, won’t be allowed in Ignacio High School to watch the action.

“Due to the recent surge of COVID infections, we as an administration have decided that there will NOT be spectators allowed at this year’s event,” said IHS athletic director Leo Garand in an email. ”With a large contingency of teams in attendance, we felt that with our limited gym space that this was a better option than reducing the number of teams and participants. The event will be live streamed on all three of our YouTube channels for fans to keep up on the action. Sorry for any inconvenience.“

Garand said he’d post the links soon. More information is at https://athletics.ignacioschools.org.
