In what seemed like a very long time since the Bayfield High School boys wrestling team received a dual-meet win, but that’s exactly what happened when Monte Vista came calling to Bayfield.
The Wolverines ended up winning 38-35.
Cody Speece won via pin at the 113-pound weight class for Bayfield, as did Garrett Beebem who pinned his opponent in the 126-pound weight class.
“I felt like we wrestled really well,” Bayfield head coach Neil Barnes said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “We had some impressive battles.”
Some of those impressive matches were from Sam Westbrook who remained undefeated on the year by pinning his opponent at 285 pounds. Macoy Michaeli also got a pin at 170 pounds, as did Lane Grimwood at 160 pounds.
Valiant efforts came in the form of losses from Bayfield. Nate Howell at 120 pounds, Tyler Conner at 145 pounds, Ryan Nava at 152 pounds and Dakota Ehart at 220 pounds all wrestled well, Barnes said.
“This was a big win as a team against league opponent,” Barnes said. “It was a huge win for the wrestling program. I think we’re coming along and we’ll peak at the right time.”
