Bayfield YAFL team heading to 3rd straight championship

Fifth graders are undefeated this year

The Bayfield fifth grade team in the Young American Football League is heading to its third straight Four Corners Superbowl this Saturday, facing the Aztec Tigers for the third championship, as well.

Bayfield won the title against Aztec in the third grade, then Aztec took the championship back in 2017.

Bayfield is undefeated this year and is the top seed as the team heads into the championship game.

"We have a really stout, tough, defense," said head coach Justin Ross.

Only three touchdowns have been made against the Wolverines all season. "Our offensive line is really incredible. At this age, it's hard to block," he said of his 10- and 11-year-old players.

The team plays at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bloomfield High School.

This year's captains are Zayden Cundiff, Rance Rathjen, Tristyn Vavrina and Caden Ross.

Other members of this year's squad are Alan Boling, Andre Thompson, Brayden Hoffman, Brock Ferrier, Brody Laventure, Caedon Schneider, Caden Campbell, Caelan Ramos, DJ Valencia, Daemon Christner, Esai Gonzales, Estevan Gonzales, Grady Williamson, Justin Westbrook, Keegan Johnston, Kingston Martinez, Kyle Russell, Tavian Box, Tyler Harriman and Uriah Philips.

Assistant coaches this season are Clay Rathjen, Daniel Russell and Jimmie Cundiff.
