Two Bayfield High School baseball stars garnered the attention of the rest of the state with their play in 2019.
That landed them honorable mention status on the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 3A All-State team.
Hayden Farmer and Max McGhehey were selected for their efforts this past season. McGhehey led the Wolverines with a .482 batting average and recorded 27 hits and 17 runs batted in. He also scored 19 runs. Farmer hit .338 and had an on-base percentage of .415. He recorded 27 hits, 20 RBIs and scored 23 runs. Farmer also had nine multi-hit games and recorded at least three hits in three different games, all of which came against Class 3A Intermountain League opponents en route t the league title with an unblemished 10-0 record.
On the mound, Farmer had an earned-run average of 3.22 and finished with a 3-1 record. He struck out 42 batters and walked 20, while he gave up 34 hits and 42 runs, 17 of which were earned in 37 innings pitched. Farmer’s best performance on the mound came against Centauri in April when he gave up three hits, one run and struck out 11. He also struck out eight against Brush in early April.
While McGhehey was dominant at the plate, he was also efficient on the mound. In eight outings, he had an ERA of 3.23 and pitched to a 4-2 record. McGhehey struck out 22 batters and gave up 21 hits, 24 runs – 12 of which were earned – and also issued 12 walks. His best outing came against Olathe in an 18-3 win in March when gave up three runs on two hits and struck out 10 in five innings of work.
McGhehey will attend Trinidad Junior College next fall where he will play baseball.
No Durango or Ignacio High School players made the all-state list.
