Bayfield’s game against Telluride postponed

Weather puts Telluride’s visit on hold

Chances are, Lauren Moran would have had much of her varsity back on Tuesday evening.

But because of a persistent overnight snowfall, her Wolverines’ scheduled nonleague game versus 2A Telluride was postponed, denying Bayfield a chance to quickly atone for a 53-13 loss Friday at 2A Monte Vista.

Minus seniors Alaysia Kremer (injury) and Abria Thayer (out of state), plus juniors Michelle Kirk (illness) and Madison Mead (collegiate CNA program clinicals), BHS fell behind Monte Vista 11-0 after one quarter and went into halftime trailing 32-6.

Able to knock down two three-pointers, senior Genesis Barrera totaled eight points in defeat. Freshman Arriyanna Cundiff booked three points, and junior Lily Lewin two as Bayfield – suiting up seven for the nonleague contest – dipped to 2-1 overall (0-0 3A/4A Intermountain).

Senior Lexi Marquez led the Pirates (4-1) with 16 points. Junior Stephanie Lopez added seven, and sophomores Sasha DuPont and Angeleah Mora each contributed six.

A reschedule date for the THS game has yet to be announced.

The Wolverines are scheduled to next head to 4A Aztec (New Mexico) Thursday evening, then host 2A San Juan (Utah) on Saturday.

BHS’ boys (2-3 overall), meanwhile, will next travel to Aztec on Friday, eager to follow up their 40-37 road win at Monte Vista (3-1) this past Friday.

Scott Key’s Wolverines will also host Jeff Johnson’s SJHS Broncos on Saturday. Johnson recently replaced Johnny Slavens, who stepped down after posting a season-opening 1-1 mark in succeeding predecessor Travis Black, who guided San Juan to the 2022 UHSAA Class 2A state championship back in February with a 45-44 win over Enterprise.
