Bayfield’s Heide sets a new Colorado 3A record in 300 hurdles

Courtesy of Gary HeideBayfield senior hurdler Carl Heide broke the previous best time for a Class 3A runner from Colorado in the 300-meter hurdles Saturday at the Aztec Invitational in New Mexico. He won the event in 39.36 seconds, 0.03 seconds faster than the previous record.

Carl Heide’s record-breaking day helped pace the Bayfield High School boys track and field team to a win at the B&B Aztec Invitational in New Mexico.

Heide won the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. He won the 110 in 14.75 seconds, but he was only getting started. He ran the 300 hurdles in 38.36 seconds, which is the fastest time ever recorded by a Colorado Class 3A athlete in the event. The previous mark was 38.39 seconds.

That helped the Bayfield boys team win the meet with a score of 102 points. The Durango girls team won the meet with 62 points.

Also in the boys meet, Dawson Heide won the 400-meter run in 51 seconds flat.

The Wolverines 4x100 relay team of Carl and Dawson Heide, Dylan Hilliker and Wyatt Killinen placed first in 44:02, and the 4x400 team of the Heide brothers, Killinen and Dax Snooks won in 3:29.76. Bloomfield was second, more than 6.5 seconds back in 3:36.31.

Snooks won the high jump with a height of 6-feet.

BHS swept the shot put, with Ryan Phelps taking the top spot with a throw of 50-03.0. Killinen was second and David Hawkins was third.

Phelps also won the discus with a throw of 155-06.

Alex Hise of Durango High School won the 100 with a time of 10.98 seconds and the 200 in 11.21.

Durango swept the 800 with Aidan Fitzgerald winning in a time of 1:59.51. Noah Bodewes and Logan Moore placed second and third, respectively.

Bodewes also won the 1,600 in 4:33.43.

Durango’s Dylan Baken won the pole vault with a mark of 13-feet.

The DHS girls came away with first and second in the 400. Bekah Moenning finished first in 1:00.35, followed by Teagan Garand in 1:00.75.

Emma Fitzgerald won the 800 in 2:26.33 for DHS. Cassandra Blau was second in the 100-meter dash in 12.77 seconds, and she was third in the 200-meter dash in 27.03 seconds.

Bayfield’s Jordan Lanning won the 100 hurdles in 16.03, the 300 hurdles in 47.89, the high jump with a height of 5-05.50, and the triple jump with a leap of 34-02 for another astounding day for the BHS junior who has eyes on multiple state championships when the meet concludes May 19 at Jefferson County Stadium.
