Bayfield's Mavis Edwards make All-State

BHS freshman made tennis state final

Bayfield tennis player Mavis Edwards was recognized as one of the best tennis players in Colorado as a 2017 First-Team All-State selection.

Edwards, a Bayfield freshman who competes for the Durango High School team, was named The Durango Herald Freshman of the Year after finishing as the runner-up in No. 1 singles at the CHSAA 4A State Girls Tennis Tournament. She lost only one match during the regular season and won the regional title by beating last year's state runner up Sara Schoenbeck from Pueblo West.

Edwards cruised through the first few state tournament matches to land a spot in the state final match, but lost to defending state champion Josie Schaffer of Kent Denver.

"Freshman year was a bit different than playing in middle school and I didn't know anyone on the team at first," she said. "I just wanted to fit in and be a coachable player. It doesn't matter how good you are if nobody likes you and it's hard to improve if you aren't coachable. I didn't expect to do as well as I did, but when the season started I was just feeling it out there. I guess it was like that until the very last match."
