The Bear Dance Fire that flared up east of Ignacio city limits on Friday has been extinguished.

The blaze consumed 89 acres and required assistance from three interagency hot-shot crews, aircraft support and temporary power cuts to Ignacio and Bayfield residents to facilitate firefighters’ efforts.

The Southern Ute Indian Tribe announced Tuesday morning that fire crews successfully wrestled the Bear Dance Fire into submission without any injuries or loss of structures.

The fire was reported at 12:23 p.m. Friday and quickly grew to 20 acres in size. La Plata Electric Association temporarily shut off power to about 5,700 residents of Ignacio and Bayfield that afternoon because power lines were in close proximity to the fire and firefighting efforts, LPEA said.

Dry cottonwood trees and brush along the Pine River fueled the Bear Dance Fire as fire crews from Los Pinos Fire Protection District, the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, the U.S. Forest Service, Durango Fire Protection District and other area resources fought over the weekend to contain the blaze to the riverbed, according to news releases from the Southern Ute Indian Tribe.

The fire necessitated the evacuation of the tribal campus and closures of county roads 321, 516 and 517. Ute Park Road between County Road 517 and Bear Dance Road remained closed, according to Tuesday’s release.

Fire crews are implementing a phased reopening of recreational areas. Announcements about reopenings will be posted on Southern Ute Indian Tribe social media accounts as they are determined.

Lindsay Box, spokeswoman for the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, said in a statement posted to the Southern Ute Indian Tribe’s Facebook page on Tuesday that crews responded quickly and contained the blaze quickly.
