A bear broke out a car window in south Durango early Tuesday morning, absconding with 2 quart bags of trail mix that had been left in the front seat.
The window may have been left down a few inches, enabling the bear to break the window and get in, said Lynn May, mother of car owner Jeremy May. The break-in took place around 4 a.m. in the 700 block of East Seventh Avenue.
“He heard the crash, and our dog was real upset,” she said.
Lynn May said the family is careful to latch its bear-proof trash can.
Bryan Peterson, executive director of Bear Smart Durango, said bears are opportunistic scavengers.
“Bears come into urban areas for trash, and they find other things,” he said.
Jeremy May’s mother said he was skeptical it was a burglar from the beginning.
“He’s got the crummiest car on the block,” she said.
