Bears eating up newspapers, plastic bags

Courtesy of Karyn Gabaldon

Local artist Karyn Gabaldon said a bear got to her Herald on Saturday morning before she could read it. Bears are out for the summer; for information on how to live in bear country, visti Bear Smart Durango’s website at www.bearsmartdurango.org.

A bear with a scent for good news, or maybe just upset with the new print schedule, mauled the Weekend Edition of The Durango Herald early Saturday on Riverview Drive in Durango.

Local artist Karyn Gabaldon said she went outside about 8 a.m. to pick up her newspaper to find it partially shredded, still in its orange delivery bag.

“I figure it must’ve been a bear,” Gabaldon said. “And I’ve seen a cinnamon bear in our backyard.”

It’s not the first time wildlife has shown interest in Gabaldon’s newspaper: Foxes also have been known to pick up her morning paper, she said.

“Then we find them in other places,” she said. “It’s crazy.”

Foxes that read the Herald? Maybe that’s why they’re so smart.

Bryan Peterson, with Bear Smart Durango, said he has seen bear scat around town with pieces of orange plastic bag, clearly from Herald delivery bags. The bags are likely intermixed with trash and get devoured with everything else, he said.

“A lot of the food they find is enclosed in plastic, so it would make sense that they would investigate that,” Peterson said.

“Typically they only eat USA Today,” he joked. “They don’t like it.”
