Beat the buzzer to nominate Durango Athletic Hall of Fame candidates

Deadline for inaugural nominations sent to selection committee is April 30
Durango is home to some of the nation’s top mountain and river athletes along with numerous champions from Durango High School and Fort Lewis College. All can be honored in the Durango Athletic Hall of Fame.

Two days remain to nominate athletic figures to be considered for selection in the first class of the Durango Athletic Hall of Fame.

The deadline for nominations for the newly-created hall of fame is April 30. Those nominated will then be considered by the Durango Athletic Hall of Fame selection committee and formally inducted in a ceremony Oct. 26 at the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall.

As of noon Tuesday, 22 athletes and contributors to athletics within Durango had bee nominated across a wide range of activities.

The Durango Athletic Hall of Fame aims to induct 10 members in its inaugural class to crown a Mount Rushmore of Durango sports figures.

“Our goal is to induct the 10 most iconic figures in Durango athletics when we get together in October,” said DAHOF co-founder Dale Garland.

The Durango Athletic Hall of Fame is open to athletes of all sports as well as those who have made significant contributions through coaching, media, officiating and philanthropy.

Of the 22 nominations so far, only six are women. The Durango Athletic Hall of Fame aims to induct a diverse class and bring the various sports communities together for a special celebration.

In a town loaded with past Olympians and national champions and the hundreds of athletes who have shined for Fort Lewis College and Durango High School, the goal is to make the inaugural class a tough task for the selection committee to narrow down while still leaving several qualified athletes and contributors to be inducted in future classes.

The Durango Athletic Hall of Fame has a Facebook page where the induction form can be found. For more information, contact the Durango Athletic Hall of Fame at durangoathletichalloffame@gmail.com.
