Bedhead Coffeehouse shuts doors

Cafe renounced Wi-Fi in name of conversation
Just shy of its two-year anniversary, Bedhead Coffeehouse on Colorado Highway 3 is closing its doors.

Bedhead Coffeehouse is closing permanently.

Because of a death in the family, the coffee shop on Colorado Highway 3 has been dark since Nov. 22 and was scheduled to reopen Monday. But on Friday, business owner Patrick Booth posted on Facebook that the doors are closed for good.

Booth posted that Bedhead, which opened in April 2015, became a reality “better than he imagined,” but the grueling duties of entrepreneurship became too much.

Booth could not be reached Friday for comment.

Known as the only coffee shop in town that renounced Wi-Fi in the name of human conversation, locals revered Bedhead as a homey hangout that offered games and newspapers, once standard in coffeehouses of yore.

Ruth Cutcher, Booth’s wife, posted an accompanying farewell, asking customers to stay in touch.

“The shop felt a little like ‘Cheers’ with lots of friendly and familiar faces gathered in one place,” she wrote. “These days, I have to fight back waves of sadness as I drive into town on Highway 3 – the shop is closed and empty.”

Andrew Thompson of Albuquerque posted his regrets as well.

“We always make a point of stopping there when we were in town,” he said. “Best coffee I ever had. May have to take a drive for one more.”

Bedhead frequenters will have a chance to say goodbye at a Jan. 14 farewell reception where gift card-holders can cash out, according to the Facebook post.
