John Bernazzani has stepped down as the head the softball coach at Durango High School.
After coaching the softball team from 2007 through 2012, the last five as the team’s head coach, Bernazzani returned to the helm in 2019 and coached the Demons for another four years. Bernazzani also assisted coaching DHS’ baseball team in 2015, 2016 and 2019. Additionally, Bernazzani started the Durango Danger youth softball club back in 2007. The Danger program has since integrated with Durango’s youth baseball league as it continues to provide opportunities for girls to learn the game.
“Coaching is definitely a labor of love,” Bernazzani said. “You want them to enjoy the sport and you want them to continue to play because it’s a very important time for them.”
When asked what his favorite part of coaching was, Bernazzani said, “It’s a wonderful sport and I have a passion for both baseball and softball, but I have to say it’s the kids.”
The Demons went 34-51 during Bernazzani’s latest stint, highlighted by a 13-10 outing in the fall 2021 season. The program, which was started in 1999, has only made the state playoffs once, in 2011.
“I would have liked to have come back and helped them get another playoff spot, but we’re making some noise down here,” he said. “In 2020 and 2021 we were probably one win away from making in.”
The time commitment of coaching, not only during the season, but also in the offseason, however, adds up.
Bernazzani, who is the owner/broker of Durango Star Realty, said he needs to dedicate more time to his business.
“I need to get some time back,” he said.
Bernazzani said he’ll help his replacement, once hired, with the transition anyway he can. He’ll also continue to announce DHS’ baseball games. Beyond that, Bernazzani said he’s looking forward to standing on top of a fourteener again and, hopefully, getting an elk next hunting season.
“I had incredible support from parents and some absolutely fantastic kids,” Bernazzani said. “It’s been a privilege to coach such a good group of girls.”
