Your best bets for this weekend will be located outside of Durango, 27 miles north at Purgatory Resort and 45 miles west in Cortez.
One of Purgatory’s most popular events, the “Muck and Mire” Mud Adventure Race, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. The course features more than 20 obstacles, including mud pits, a mountain water slide, hay bales, climbing walls and more mud pits. Athletes can run a 5K or 10K race, and a 1-mile course will be set up for kids.
The Montezuma County Fair will be held Saturday at the fairgrounds in Cortez and will feature a slew of events through the day, including a tractor pull, corn-shucking contest, chicken chases, Four Corners Community Bank money hunts, motorcycle show, Ute tribe bear dance, scavenger hunt, chili and salsa contest, greased-pig race, livestock sale and demolition derby. Four Corners balloonists will launch 20 colorful hot-air balloons starting at 6:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday from Parque de Vida as part of the annual Cortez Rendezvous Hot Air Balloon Rally. Weather permitting, balloons are scheduled to leave the ground at the same time each day and float above Cortez in the morning.
