Saturday is April Fools’ Day, so keep your guard up.
Dating to Chaucer’s 1392 Canterbury Tales, April 1 has historically been a day for trickery and funny business. For instance, on April 1, 1976, astronomer Patrick Moore announced on BBC Radio 2 that, at exactly 9:47 a.m., a rare planetary alignment of Pluto and Jupiter would temporarily decrease gravity on Earth and make people weigh less. Calls from listeners who claimed to feel the effects flooded the station. A Dutch woman said she and her husband weightlessly floated around the room together. One man even said he was lifted from the ground so quickly that he hit his head on the ceiling, and demanded compensation.
Important reminder: Ballots for the city election must be returned by 7 p.m. Tuesday – so don’t mail them now. Voters should drop their ballots at the City Clerk’s Office, 949 East Second Ave., or 24-hour drop box at the La Plata County Clerk’s Office, 98 Everett St., Suite C, in Bodo Park. Voters will chose three Durango City Council members and decide whether to remove fluoride from the drinking water.
