Best bets for the weekend

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the summer, and of course, it is the weekend of the annual Iron Horse Bicycle Classic in Durango.

The Iron Horse originates from the 1970s when Tom Mayer accepted a challenge from his brother, Jim, to race the train from Durango to Silverton on his 10-speed. He won, and the story inspired an annual race that now attracts cyclists from all over the country and world.

Three races will be held Saturday on U.S. Highway 550 from Durango: the Durango Coca-Cola Road Race and McDonald’s Citizens Tour to Silverton and the Quarter Horse to Purgatory Resort. Other Iron Horse events include a finish-line festival at Memorial Park in Silverton, the Adventure Pro BMX Straight Rhythm Demo, Durango Cyclery Cruiser Crit, Morehart Murphy Subaru Mountain Bike Race and various bike-related activities for kids.
