Durango’s best bets for the weekend include the Animas Valley Balloon Rally from Friday to Sunday and the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall open house Sunday.
People will gather this weekend in the Animas Valley, about 10 miles north of Durango at U.S. Highway 550 and Hermosa Meadows Road, to watch hot air balloons take to the sky during the second annual Animas Valley Balloon Rally.
The event will kick off with a media flight at 8:15 a.m. Friday, and two mass-ascensions will be featured at the same time Saturday and Sunday, with tethered hot-air balloon rides available for $10. Parking will be available in the meadow. Attendees will not be permitted to park along Highway 550.
The rally will also include “balloon glows” at 7 p.m. Friday from the General Palmer Hotel to East Second Avenue in downtown Durango and at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the launch site in Hermosa. Attendees can view the inflation of balloons at 6:30 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of Main Avenue, in front of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad depot. Photography is encouraged and images captured by community members can be printed onto shirts at the location.
