World Labyrinth Day, a global celebration of peace, unity and labyrinths, occurs on Saturday.
The labyrinth originates from Greek mythology, first described as a type of maze that was created by Daedalus and presented to King Minos of Crete at Knossos. Daedalus built the labyrinth to hold the Minotaur, a creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man that was eventually slain by Theseus, but its design was so clever that he nearly failed to escape it himself. It classically represents the notion of keeping harmful spirits away from the good folks in the community.
In contemporary times, the labyrinth has adopted a slew of meanings, though World Labyrinth Day is focused on themes of global peace, community and “walking together.”
Community labyrinths in Durango are located at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 East Third Ave., and in the labyrinth and meditation garden at Mercy Regional Medical Center, 1010 Three Springs Blvd.
