Best bets this weekend in and around Durango include “The Main Event” party on Saturday, Earth Day festivities on Sunday and free skiing and snowboarding all weekend at Purgatory Resort.
“The Main Event” community party will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday on Main Avenue between 26th and 30th streets.
Games and activities will be featured, including live music, food, historical tours, a slack line, a quarter pipe for skateboarding and roller-blading, tortilla-making station, chalk art and more. Participants can walk or bike around the four blocks and learn about the businesses and amenities offered in the North Main Avenue District.
Participants will be able to pick up a “passport” to be stamped at activity stations. After 10 stamps are received, passports can be turned in for a free gift bag and a chance to win a backpack from Osprey.

Earth Day, held annually on April 22, began in 1970 and celebrates the birth of the modern environmental movement. This year’s observance is on Sunday, and Durango will celebrate the with several events and activities:
Durango Nature Studies will hold an Earth Day Festival, including a community run and kayak races, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Rotary Park, 1565 East Second Ave. The festival will feature music, booths, food, prizes, arts and crafts, kayak races at 11:30 a.m., a 5K race at 10:30 a.m. and a 1-mile family fun run at 10:35 a.m.

Citizens Climate Lobby and Indivisible Durango will host the Children’s Earth Day Parade and People’s Climate March from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Sunday on Main Avenue. The theme is “every animal deserves a habitat,” and those attending are encouraged to create posters and artwork for the event to show their support. Participants are asked to arrive by 10:20 a.m. at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad depot, 479 Main Ave. The march will end at Rotary Park, 1565 East Second Ave.

The Fort Lewis College Environmental Center will host “Leaf a Legacy” – a tree-planting and barbecue picnic event – from noon to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the college’s Food Forest. Participants are encouraged to plant an apple tree seedling provided by Montezuma Orchard Restoration Project, which will help build soil, restore the water table, sink carbon and eventually feed the community. Those who attend should be prepared with closed-toed shoes, gloves, water and sun protection. The barbecue picnic will feature farm-fresh, humane and locally-sourced meat and vegetable options.

Free lift tickets will be offered Saturday and Sunday at Purgatory Resort to celebrate the final weekend of the season.
The mountain will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. Skiers and snowboarders can pick up free lift tickets at the ticket window before heading to the slopes.
