Best bets for the weekend in and around Durango

The best bet this weekend is to head north from Durango to the “Muck and Mire” mud run at Purgatory Resort.

The annual adventure race, sponsored by First National Bank of Durango, will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the resort, located 27 miles north of Durango at 1 Skier Place.

One of Purgatory’s most popular events, the race, which doubles as a party, is as much fun to watch as it is to run. Teams or individual athletes can run a 5K race through a course that features more than 20 obstacles, including mud pits, a mountain waterslide, hay bales, a cargo net, mud pits, a log jam, climbing walls, a cold-water plunge and more mud pits.

A 1-mile “mini muck” course will be available for young runners, with live music playing at the finish line. Participants and spectators are encouraged to show up in costume.

Registration includes a shirt, race photos and post-race beverages from Steamworks Brewing Co. and Coca-Cola.
