Best bets this weekend include the Old Time Music Dance Party, with live music by Six Dollar String Band, square dance fashion show and easy square dance lesson Saturday at the Florida Grange, and the Durango Nordic Center Coke races Saturday.
The Six Dollar String Band will hold a dance Saturday night at the Florida Grange for both newbies and seasoned square dancers.
Based in Durango, the band plays old-time string music. Members include Tony Holmquist on fiddle, Stephen Sellers on bass, Brendan Shafer on banjo and Robin Davis on guitar.
“The members of Six Dollar String Band play a passionate, eclectic and refreshingly honest array of string band music native to their home in the Centennial State,” according to the band’s website.
They identify their influences as Tommy Jarrell, Uncle Dave Macon, Benton Flippen, Charlie Poole and, if you can believe it, Public Enemy, according to the group’s Facebook page.
According to the group’s website, its most recent record, “Mayday,” is a 7-inch vinyl album that documents the early development of the band’s Colorado sound.
“An EP at length, the album’s ripping fiddle and banjo tunes, backed with thumping bass and melodically-driven guitar, are woven together with audio collages that are composed from field recordings that band members collected on-site in Mayday, Colorado,” the website says.

Old Time Music Dance Party, with live music by Six Dollar String Band, starts at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Florida Grange, 656 Colorado Highway 172, in Durango. Admission is free.
The Nordic Center at Purgatory Resort is hosting its annual Coke race series sponsored by Coca-Cola. There will be races for Nordic skiers, fat bikes and snowshoes with distances for both adults and kids.
The Nordic Center has three Coke races during the winter; Saturday is billed as the second race.
“This long-standing Durango event brings together skiers, snowshoers and fat bikers to celebrate winter from beginning to end,” according to the Nordic Center. “Three distances, three costumes, with three ways to win over three Saturdays from December through March.”
Registration opens at 9 a.m.; races start at 10 a.m. at the Nordic Center.
The cost for participating is $10 for youths and $20 for adults.
