Best bets for the weekend in and around Durango

Best bets this weekend include a book signing by Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie Daniels and the Women’s March Durango.

Daniels, a part-time Durango area resident, has released his fifth book, “Let’s Make the Day Count: The Everyday Wisdom of Charlie Daniels.”

The book offers bite-sized life lessons and is broken into 100 different subjects, such as “Patience and People” and “A Mile in My Shoes.”

He will be signing copies of his new book from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Toh-Atin Gallery, 145 W. Ninth St.

The Women’s March landed on the world stage Jan. 21, 2017, a day after the inauguration of President Donald Trump and entered the record books as the largest single-day protest in U.S. history, according to The Independent.

Marches took place in Washington, D.C., New York City, Los Angeles, Denver, Toronto and London. The event was held again in January 2018, several months after the #MeToo movement put sexual harassment and sexual assault in the collective consciousness of millions of people around the world. “The Women’s March is a women-led movement bringing together people of all genders, ages, races, cultures, disabilities and backgrounds to affirm our shared humanity and pronounce our bold message of resistance and self-determination,” Indivisible Durango wrote in a news release.

The Women’s March will begin at 11 a.m. at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad depot, 479 Main Ave., and go to Buckley Park for a rally.

The theme of the Women’s March movement nationally is “Women’s Wave: Building Power.” Rally speakers will include Katie Young, a Planned Parenthood community organizer; retired Capt. Gail Harris, U.S. Navy; April Yazza, 2018-19 Ms. Hozhoni; Barbara McLachlan, state representative for House District 59; and Katie Kandarian-Morris, minister with Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Durango. The emcee will be Allie Wolfe, an activist, comedian and student at Fort Lewis College.
