Best bets this weekend in Durango and the surrounding area include an open house at Ohana Kuleana Community Garden and the Mancos Valley Summer Brewfest.
The fourth annual Mancos Valley Summer Brewfest will be held from 1 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Cottonwood Park, 230 Cedar St., in Mancos.
Attendees can enjoy craft beer from Mancos Brewing Co., Dolores River Brewery, Main Street Brewery and WildEdge Brewery Collective; wine from Guy Drew Vineyards; cider from Outlier Cellars; and food from Green Table Farm and Yia Yia’s Concession. Live music from Fiery Furnace Marching Band, Stillhouse Junkies, Carute Roma and the Afrobeatniks will be featured in the park, and the Charlie Milo Trio will perform at an after-party at Mancos Brewing Co., 484 East Frontage Road.
Activities for kids will be available under the tent at the Mancos Community Art Center’s Painted Turtle Studio and Gallery. Dogs on leashes are welcome.
Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the event for adults; $5 for 13- to 18-year-old students; and free for children 12 years old and younger. An open house and 90th birthday celebration for Durango resident and master gardener Marye Jackson will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ohana Kuleana Community Garden, located in the Animas City neighborhood at 564 E. 30th St.
The family-friendly event will include garden tours at 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.; a pie-tasting contest from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; and a toast to celebrate Jackson’s 90th birthday at noon.
The Garden Project of Southwest Colorado opened the community garden in 2013 as an effort to promote healthy living and organic growing in the community. The Hawaiian phrase “Ohana Kuleana” means “community responsibility” – or “we all own each other’s actions.”
Dogs are not allowed in the garden.
