Best bets for the weekend in and around Durango

The best bets this weekend for people in Durango include the one-year anniversary of the worldwide Women’s March on Saturday and a music performance on Sunday at Fort Lewis College.

The 2018 “March to ACTion” women’s march will take place Saturday from Rotary Park to the Durango Public Library. The event will observe the one-year anniversary of the global Women’s March, which was held Jan. 21, 2017.

Participants will gather from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at Rotary Park, 1565 East Second Ave., and then march on Main Avenue to the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave. Katie Kandarian-Morris and Shelley Silbert will give short speeches and folksinger Elle Carpenter will play music before the march.

The 2017 protest was held largely to advocate for human rights, immigration reform, workers’ rights, freedom of religion, health care reform, reproductive rights, racial equality, LGBT rights and environmental policies. The U.S. march was the largest single-day protest in the nation’s history. Worldwide participation is estimated to have been more than 5 million, including 673 marches that were held on all seven continents.

After the march, Indivisible Durango will hold a membership meeting from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the library. Plans for 2018 will be discussed.

A music performance will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Roshong Recital Hall in Jones Hall at Fort Lewis College, 1000 Rim Drive.

Trumpeter Marc Reed, with Lisa Campi Walters, piano; M. Brent Williams, violin; and Mick Hesse, trumpet, will perform works by Henri Vachey, James Stephenson, Georges Enesco, Erik Morales and Kevin McKee.

Cost is $15 for adults, $5 for children and FLC students with ID will be admitted for free.

The performance will celebrate Reed’s first solo album, “Gone, But Not Forgotten.” Attendees will receive a free copy of the album.
