Best bets for the weekend in and around Durango

People’s best bets this weekend in and around Durango include the ever-popular Snowdown on Friday, Saturday and Sunday; a guided hike at Mesa Verde National Park on Saturday and the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Snowdown started in 1979 with founders John Murrah, who had the original idea, and Terry Fiedler, who was hired to organize the first winter festival in Durango. Over the years and with every new theme, the event snowballed into the wildly popular and enthusiastic celebration seen today.

The theme this year is “A Black Tie Affair,” and events will be held through Sunday at locations around Durango.

For more information about events, the theme and the history of Snowdown, visit www.snowdown.org.

A guided hike about how to identify animal tracks during the winter will be offered at 9 a.m. Saturday at Mesa Verde National Park.

Participants will meet in the Morefield Village parking lot at Morefield Campground, located 4 miles past the park entrance, to explore nearby hillsides.

The hike is free, with a $15 park admission fee, and open to people 7 and older. Participants should be prepared to be outdoors for two to three hours and bring water and extra layers of clothing.

Registration is required, and the hike is limited to 20 people.

To register and for more information, call Chapin Mesa Archaeological Museum at 529-4631.

The Philadelphia Eagles will play the New England Patriots at 4 p.m. Sunday during the 52nd Super Bowl.

Super Bowl parties will start at 4 p.m. at these locations:
