This weekend’s best bets in Durango will be spent on the Christmas tree steam train to Cascade Canyon.
The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad “Christmas Tree Train” to Cascade Canyon will depart the station at 9:30 a.m. and return at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The railroad depot is located at 479 Main Ave.
Participants should come prepared to cut down their own white fir Christmas tree, to be hauled back to Durango on the steam train. San Juan National Forest has designated an area near the tracks, at Cascade Wye, in need of thinning, which will contribute to conservation and forest health. San Juan Mountains Association and Firewise of Southwest Colorado volunteers, and train staff, will be available to help passengers select and cut down trees at Cascade Wye.
San Juan National Forest Columbine Ranger District and SJMA partnered with the railroad to offer tree-cutting permits, which train passengers can purchase for $8. Each family can cut down one tree up to 20 feet in height with the permit.
Passengers are urged to dress appropriately for winter conditions.
