The Animas Museum will host two days of tributes to veterans that highlight the effects of World War I on Southwest Colorado, specifically La Plata County.
The museum will feature an exhibit from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday that compares uniforms of a World War I aviator and a Vietnam era Naval aviator. A poster exhibit about the lessons and legacies of the World War I will also be on display.
The museum is located at the corner of 31st Street and West Second Avenue. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for children and free for members of the La Plata County Historical Society.
On Sunday, the museum’s bell will toll 21 times at 11 a.m. and join bells across the United States in commemoration of Veterans Day. The bells toll 21 times to represent the nation’s highest honor, the 21-gun salute.
At 1 p.m. Sunday, the tribute will move to Greenmount Cemetery at 900 Cemetery Road where historic interpreters will talk about the World War I veterans buried in the cemetery.
Other Veterans Day events this weekend include the annual parade on Main Avenue from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Sunday and a free pancake breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday in Marvel at the Marvel Grange, 217 County Road 133A.
Another big event this weekend is the What a Girl Wants Expo at 10 a.m. Saturday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
There will be a host of vendors, including jewelry, hair and nail salons; cooking; and home business-related booths. There will be live music, classes and workshops during the all-day event.
Local women bartenders will mix concoctions in the first-ever female cocktail competition (starting at noon) to benefit the Women’s Resource Center in Durango. The Durango Friends of the Library will host a book swap at the event where women can give and take a book.
The entry fee is $5; tickets to attend (and taste) the cocktail competition are $15.
Preschool Storytime, 10:30 a.m., Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave. Stories, songs, rhymes and other activities for children ages 3-5.
Art of Giving Scholarship Fundraiser,
