Best bets for the weekend in and around Durango

Durango’s best bets for the weekend, which will both take place Saturday, include the first day of skiing Purgatory Resort and Mountainfilm on Tour at the Durango Arts Center.

Purgatory Resort, in its 52nd season, will open for skiing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday after weeks of tireless snowmaking efforts. Crews will run Lifts 1 and 2 to give skiers and snowboarders access to the West Fork and El Diablo trails and 683 vertical feet of skiing under Lift 2. Festivities include live music by Paul Christian from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Powderhouse and The Outskirts, a bluegrass band, from noon to 3 p.m. at Purgy’s.

Weather permitting, mountain biking will also be available until 3:30 p.m. via Lift 4 with access to the Divinity Flow and Diggler trails along with portions of the World’s Course. Purgatory is located 34 miles north of Durango at 1 Skier Place.

Durango Nature Studies will host Mountainfilm on Tour, a traveling documentary film festival, on Saturday with three screenings at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.:
