Best bets in and around Durango

Join the magical creatures of the streets Friday for the annual Snowdown Light Parade. Let the dazzling lights mystify while wizards, witches, fairies and magicians show their supernatural creativity.

The parade begins at 6 p.m. at Main Avenue and College Drive. The procession ends at 12th Street.

Floats compete for trophies in 10 divisions with special emphasis on lights and theme. Float winners will be announced at 7 p.m.

Float entry costs $100. The deadline to enter is 5 p.m. Friday or when the parade roster is full. Visit snowdown.org for entry forms.

It’s time for Durango’s annual Snowdown Chili Cook-off at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Alchemists will begin dusting off their chili cauldrons at 7 a.m. Saturday Judging will take place at 10:30 a.m. By noon, event attendees can enjoy samples of red, green and vegetarian chili and salsa. Each sample costs 50 cents.

Soft drinks, beer and, of course, Bloody Marys will be served to cool the chili burn.

The Bloody Mary contest will take place in conjunction with the cook-off. Contestants will bring their Bloody Mary mix and decorate their booths.

Ice, cups and vodka will be provided by Ironton Distillery and Crafthouse. Each Bloody Mary sample costs $1.
