Chimney Rock National Monument plans a day of free, interactive and educational public events from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in recognition of its 10th anniversary as a designated national monument. The monument is located at 3179 Colorado Highway 151. (Courtesy)

For centuries, Chimney Rock has been a sacred site for Indigenous people of the Southwest. Ten years ago, Chimney Rock National Monument was designated by presidential proclamation, making it the seventh national monument managed by the U.S. Forest Service.

The Forest Service will honor tribal traditions, histories, influences and continued connections to the area for the monument’s 10th anniversary.

On Friday, Chimney Rock will be closed to public for exclusive tribal use. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, free, interactive and educational events will be held in celebration of the anniversary.

Participants can watch dance performances, make a clay pot, design a pictograph, weave a textile, grind corn or throw a spear with an atlatl. Presenters will share the importance of astronomy, dendrochronology and offer a guided nature hike.

The monument is located at 3179 Colorado Highway 151, about 40 miles east of Durango and 20 miles west of Pagosa Springs.
