Best bets in and around Durango

Gaige Sippy, former race director of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and a board member of the Durango Mesa Park Foundation, has long dreamed of Durango having its own bike park. In homage to Ed Zink, the founder of the IHBC, Sippy said the bike park at Durango Mesa Park can be “cycling’s stadium.” (Jerry McBride/Durango Herald file)

The Second Saturday Series Seminar will be about the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic on Zoom, at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 13. Durango's Citizen of the Year Gaige Sippy will be presenting on the history of the race. There is no charge for this Zoom-only event, which will be recorded. Those interested can register at animasmuseum.org.

The Second Saturday Series Seminars are presented by the Animas Museum, 3065 West Second Ave. The seminars cover a wide variety of events from Colorado’s history.

Sippy, who has served as director of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic for 16 years and helped the annual ride through the COVID-19 pandemic, was named 2022 Citizen of the Year at this year’s 2023 Durango Rocks Awards. Sippy received the award for his commitment to the bicycle race and the work he has done planning for Durango Mesa Park.
