Best bets this weekend in and around Durango

The sound of Bach fills the sanctuary of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in 2017 at the Durango Bach Festival. This year’s festival begins Sunday and runs through March 14 at the church.

Best bets this weekend include Durango Bach Festival and “Our Town.”

The 13th annual Durango Bach Festival kicks off Sunday and runs through March 14, with all events taking place at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 910 East Third Ave.

The festival will open with two student recitals at 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday, followed by receptions in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall. The requested donation is $5 at the door.

Next week, Bach’s Lunch, a half-hour recital followed by lunch, will be held at noon Monday through Friday in the Parish Hall. Attendees can meet the musicians, enjoy lunch and mingle with other Bach enthusiasts. Concert-only tickets cost $10 and concert-plus-lunch tickets cost $15.

The Midweek Concert will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and the Festival Finale Concert will take place at 7 p.m. March 14. Advance tickets are recommended for both concerts and cost $20 for adults and $5 for students and children.

The San Juan College Theatre will present its spring drama, “Our Town,” at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday in the San Juan College Henderson Fine Arts Center Performance Hall.

“Our Town” by Thornton Wilder tells the story of the fictional American small town of Grover’s Corners between 1901 and 1913 through the everyday lives of its residents. It explores the relationship between two young Grover’s Corners’ neighbors, George Gibbs and Emily Webb, whose childhood friendship blossoms into romance, then culminates in marriage. When Emily dies in childbirth, the circle of life portrayed in each of the three acts – growing up, adulthood and death – is fully realized. The play is performed without a set on a mostly bare stage.

Tickets cost $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors, and $8 for children 12 and younger. Tickets may be purchased at the San Juan College Box Office, by calling (505) 566-3430 or online at www.sanjuancollege.edu/silhouette.
