Best bets this weekend in and around Durango

Best bets this weekend include the Silverton Skijoring competition and Purple XPerience – A Tribute to Prince concert at Sky Ute Casino.

The Silverton Skijoring competition returns this weekend after its 2018 hiatus with its biggest purse yet – $10,000, championship buckles and other prizes. Skijoring teams consist of a horse, rider and skier. Skiers hold onto a tow rope and are guided by the horse and rider through an obstacle course of jumps, gates and rings. Teams are timed as they race down Blair Street. The fastest finishers win prizes.

The traditional categories of Open, Sport and Novice classes will be joined this year by the “Fat Boy” class for “slightly older and slower horses, riders and skiers.” Entry fees for Open, Sport and Novice classes are $50 per team per day, and only $10 per team per day for the Fat Boy class. Contestants can enter as a team or individually.

Early registration and live entertainment by Lacey Black will run from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Grand Imperial Hotel. Race day registration will be held from 7:30 to 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Sage Hen Cafe, with races starting at noon each day. The event is free for spectators, but donations are appreciated. This is a dog-free event.
