Best bets this weekend include the Downtown Balloon Glow and the 10-Minute Play Celebration.
The Downtown Balloon Glow, part of the Animas Valley Balloon Rally, will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday in the 500 block of Main Avenue, in front of the railroad depot.
Spectators can arrive around 6 p.m. to watch the balloons inflate, then enjoy the glow beginning around 6:30 p.m., weather permitting. Visitors will have the opportunity to be up close to watch the balloon pilots in action.
Participants are encouraged to bring their cameras and take advantage of the portable T-shirt factory to make a T-shirt with their favorite photos. There will also be “candlesticks,” which are the balloon basket and burners, without the balloon. Pilots will allow participants to get in the basket and pull the burner. Balloons will come down between 7:30 and 8 p.m.
The glow is sponsored by the Durango Business Improvement District. For more information, visit www.downtowndurango.org/balloonglow.
The ninth annual 10-Minute Play Celebration will offer three showings at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday at Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.
Beginning in November of each year, DAC invites playwrights from around the world to submit original 10-minute plays. The plays then go through a tiered reading process, and the top plays are chosen. Top plays are then fully produced and performed by local directors and actors.
This year’s festival plays include Grand Prize winner “Just Desserts” by Mike Solomonson, People’s Choice Award winner “Speed Dating” by Nedra Roberts, “Ring Of Truth” by Marsha Roberts, “Thank You For Your Service” by Mike Solomonson and “Waiting For God-Knows-What” by Mario Rivas.
Tickets are $14 for DAC members and $16 for general admission. To purchase tickets online, visit bit.ly/31mUdbv.
