Best bets this weekend in Durango

Best bets this weekend include the Backcountry Film Festival at the Durango Arts Center and a gathering to make your own Victorian-style Valentine’s Day cards.

Durango Nature Studies will host the seventh annual Backcountry Film Festival, which focuses mostly on winter sports and backcountry experiences, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave. Doors open at 7 p.m.

Films this year include: “Ode to Muir,” “Ski the Wild West,” “The Abbey,” “The Backcountry Snowsports Initiative,” “Abandoned,” “Blue,” “I Am Here,” “Surfer Dan,” Searching for Christmas Tree” and “Westward: Brennan Lagasse.”

Tickets can be purchased in advance online for $12 for DNS members and $15 for non-members. At the door, they are $15 for DNS members and $20 for nonmembers.

Event sponsors include Hesperus Ski Patrol, Durango Outdoor Exchange and Backcountry Experience.

For lovers in search of the perfect Valentine’s Day card, why not make it yourself?

The Animas Museum will host an event from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the museum, 3065 West Second Ave., for people who want to create their own cards, in the Victorian style.

The cost is $30 per person. Seating is limited, call the museum at 259-2402 to reserve a spot. No refunds. Proceeds benefit the Animas Museum. Participants must bring scissors; everything else will be provided.
