Best-selling author Sarah Vowell, perhaps most widely known for her contributions to National Public Radio's "This American Life," comes to the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17.
Born in Oklahoma and raised in Montana, Vowell has penned six nonfiction books on American history and culture. By examining the connections between the American past and present, she offers personal, often humorous accounts of everything from presidents and their assassins to colonial religious fanatics, as well as thoughts on American Indians, utopian dreamers, pop music and the odd cranky cartographer. Her most recent book is Lafayette in the Somewhat United States.
As described on NPR, Vowell's work is "gilded with snark, buoyant on charm, Vowell's brand of history categorically refuses to take itself - or any of its subjects - too seriously."
As a critic and reporter, Vowell has contributed to numerous newspapers and magazines, including Esquire, GQ, Los Angeles Times, The Village Voice, Spin, The New York Times Book Review and McSweeney's. She is a former columnist for Time, Salon.com and San Francisco Weekly.
Called hip, irreverent, and with a voice that NPR fans of "This American Life" instantly perked up to, Vowell is said to make both readers and listeners laugh out loud with her wry, comic observations on everything from politics to pop culture.

Celebrating its 20th Anniversary Season in 2016-2017, the Community Concert Hall is a not-for-profit, multi-use performance venue located on the campus of Fort Lewis College. Its ability to bring a diverse spectrum of shows to Southwest Colorado is made possible through a partnership with the college, a state-supported, independent institution of higher education, and through financial and in-kind contributions from generous members of the community.
