My family made the move back to Durango two years ago with plans to spend the rest of our lives in this incredible community.
With so many budget and regulatory items on the docket, it has been encouraging to see all of the candidates run passionate, informative city council campaigns. I have enjoyed reading their positions over the last week and it’s important that we vote for the candidates who will truly be avid proponents for smart growth in Durango (an increase in La Plata County’s population of 6,500 residents by 2020 is estimated).
We need to elect community leaders with foresight, and I believe Chris Bettin is that candidate. Chris has clearly expressed the hopes and intentions of his candidacy at multiple public functions that I’ve attended. I appreciate that he is a proponent of expanding infill accessory dwelling unit development and vacation rental opportunities to all of Durango’s neighborhoods, rather than just two. He will balance those and other property rights issues with implementing regulations that will assist in helping recover the city’s tax base from the hit it took from oil and gas, while minimizing any adverse impacts to our neighborhoods and community character.
