Let’s be clear, the platform of the ultra-conservative Durango School District 9-R board slate of Richard “Dean” Hill, Kristine Paslay and Donna Gulec is a Trojan horse.
They claim to be concerned about test scores and graduation rates and cite phony statistics to make these claims. What they really aim to do is end mask mandates and whitewash American history. They are supported by the same people who rudely disrupted the last two, in-person school board meetings. But more concerning still is the fact that at least one of the slate members, Dean Hill, vigorously opposes the separation of church and state.
Take a look at YouTube to see Mr. Hill’s video sermon for the Bayfield Pine River Valley Church where he is a pastor. Around minute 43:29 of his Aug. 22, 2021, sermon entitled, “Jesus the Good Shepard,” he rails on about the “lie of the separation of church and state.” No matter one’s faith or belief system, this should be frightening. The U.S. Supreme Court long ago determined that public schools are an arm of the state and must be motivated by a secular purpose.
Please prevent Mr. Hill and his cohorts from sneaking their subversive agenda into our schools. Cast your vote for the candidates who support the teaching of a curriculum based in fact and scientific theory – Erika Brown, Andrea Parmenter and Rick Peterson.
