BHS baseball 9th in preseason poll

Ignacio receives votes

With all the snow still covering the ground locally, one might not guess baseball season is rapidly approaching in southwestern Colorado.

But it is, and the Wolverines will start as a top-10 team in the first CHSAANow.com Class 3A poll, released Monday. The Wolverines, under second-year Coach Jon Qualls, received 21 points in the voting and made the list at #9, five points ahead of Brush.

Perennial contender Eaton received 100 points and #1 billing. Arvada Faith Christian (80) and Lamar (70) were second and third, with Greeley University (49), Kent Denver (47), Gilcrest Valley (44), Sterling (36) and Gunnison (29) bridging the gap back to BHS.

In Class 2A, Ignacio received four points in the voting to tie with Haxtun in the Receiving Votes grouping of "bubble" teams, led by San Juan Basin League force Dolores (13). Loveland Resurrection Christian (97), Rye (92) and Denver Christian headed up the top 10.

Bayfield is scheduled to scrimmage Durango tomorrow in Farmington, then start season play Tuesday on the road against Piedra Vista. The boys are looking forward to their first season on the new BHS ballfield, altough it's been too wet to practice on it this week.

Ignacio's official scheduled games start March 19-21 at a tournament in Piedra Vista.
