Sixth place on the basketball court apparently didn't sit so well with a couple of Wolverines.

So three days after wrapping up the basketball season in Golden, senior Matthew Knickerbocker and junior Zane Phelps quickly helped Bayfield Baseball look, well, golden Tuesday afternoon in Olathe.

With each diamond regular plating three runs, BHS battered the non-league 3A Pirates into submission, 13 to nothing. Knickerbocker went 3-for-4 with a double and Phelps was 2-3 with a triple.

"They haven't missed a beat," Head Coach Jon Qualls said of his players making the quick turnaround. "So that was good."

Ultimately leading the attack, however, was Brody McGhehey. He received a no-decision in his season-opening start a week earlier. But credited with the win at OHS, the junior improved his pitching record to 1-0 and also doubled twice, drove in two and scored four times himself while officially batting 3-for-3.

Kelton McCoy bashed a three-run homer in the third inning and Noah Loutherback ripped two doubles as Bayfield moved to 1-1 overall in the young season entering the Pueblo County Hornet Invitational this coming Monday and Tuesday, March 23-24.

The Wolverines are slated to play a 1:30 p.m./4:30 p.m. doubleheader on the first day against, respectively, 3A Raton, New Mexico, and 4A Pueblo South-and an 11 a.m. contest versus 4A Pueblo County on the second upon the venue's Andenucio Field.

BHS' early-season away stretch then continues April 1 in Alamosa at Adams State University versus 3A Colorado Springs St. Mary's, before the team returns for its home-opener on the fourth (11 a.m. start) against 5A Aztec on its new home turf.
