BHS baseball continues strong start

The Bayfield Wolverines had no problem picking up three wins at Farmington High School’s junior varsity tournament in New Mexico this week.

BHS (4-0) closed out the three-day tournament with a 10-0 win against Farmington’s junior varsity squad.

Taed Heydinger threw six scoreless innings while striking out four and walking two. He allowed just three hits.

“He threw the ball well,” BHS head coach Jonathon Qualls said of the sophomore pitcher.

Kelton McCoy had a 3-for-3 day at the plate.

Zane Phelps was 3-for-5.

Matthew Knickerbocker was 2-for-3.

“We kind of spread the hits up and down the lineup. Everybody had a couple of hits,” Qualls said. “McCoy certainly had the best day of them all.”

BHS, after its undefeated start to the 2014 regular season, is ready to jump up and play varsity competition for the first time this season at the Piedra Vista Invitational, a three-day tournament that will begin Thursday at Ricketts Park in Farmington.

Durango High School also will be at the multiclassification tournament next weekend.

“This last tournament was a JV tournament where we were playing some bigger schools. Usually their JV gives us pretty good games,” Qualls said.

“Next week it is a varsity tournament, so it will definitely be a lot different play when we go against Farmington, (Piedra Vista) and Aztec.”
